Engineering services (Water mist systems)

FESOL assesses water mist fire protection for buildings, plant and specialist hazards where the proposed system has suitable supporting evidence. We establish the protection objective, review the installation conditions and coordinate the system with the wider fire strategy.

The assessment considers the hazard, enclosure, ventilation, obstructions and operating environment. Equipment selection follows the tested and approved limits of the particular system. Water mist suitability is established for the application; it cannot be assumed from nozzle pressure or water consumption alone.

NFPA DESIGN CAPABILITY

NFPA 750 design support

Where NFPA 750 forms part of the agreed design basis, we address the water mist system requirements alongside the selected manufacturer’s design manual, application testing and approval evidence. The applicable edition, acceptance criteria and local approval requirements are recorded at the start of the appointment.

Scope of expertise

  • Hazard assessment and suitability review for the proposed water mist application
  • Review of manufacturer fire-test evidence, listings and design limitations
  • Nozzle layout, obstructions, pipework and pressure requirements
  • Water supply, pump or cylinder arrangements and equipment interfaces
  • Review of specialist hydraulic calculations and system schedules
  • Detection, release, alarms, ventilation shutdown and other cause-and-effect interfaces
  • Commissioning requirements, acceptance information and handover documentation

Coordinating the system with the facility

Nozzle coverage, ceiling conditions, enclosure openings and changes to the protected equipment can affect the proposed arrangement. We identify these interfaces early and record matters requiring confirmation by the architect, equipment supplier or responsible specialist.

For existing systems, the review starts with the installed equipment, available design records and current use of the space. Proposed alterations are assessed against the original application limits and any revised protection objective.

Design deliverables

The appointment can include a design-basis report, coordinated layout requirements, specifications, calculation reviews and a commissioning evidence schedule. Responsibilities for product-specific calculations, equipment selection and installation are agreed with the project team.

Where a different protection method needs to be assessed, we can compare the project requirements with gas suppression, sprinkler and firewater systems or other suitable options.

Start with the hazard and project information

Send the building or equipment layout, hazard description, operating conditions, available water supply and any proposed manufacturer system. For an existing installation, include drawings, test records and the reason for the review.
