Battery energy storage systems BESS
BESS fire safety assessments covering battery hazards, manufacturer evidence, site layout, protection measures and emergency arrangements across South Africa

Engineering services (BESS fire engineering)
The assessment starts with the battery chemistry, capacity, enclosure arrangement, operating conditions and the manufacturer’s safety information. Thermal runaway, propagation between cells or units, flammable gas release, explosion hazards, smoke and exposure to neighbouring assets need a coordinated risk assessment. A generic equipment schedule cannot establish the safety of a particular installation.
Containerised outdoor systems, indoor battery rooms and battery installations associated with solar or backup power have different constraints. The location, nearby occupancies, access routes, water supplies and emergency arrangements influence the fire strategy. Existing installations and proposed capacity increases should be assessed against the evidence and assumptions available for the actual system.
Scope of expertise
The appointment is defined around the facility, available information and required project outcomes. Relevant services can include:
- BESS fire hazard assessment and project-specific fire safety strategy
- Review of thermal runaway, propagation and manufacturer test evidence, including relevant UL 9540A reports where available
- Siting, separation, enclosure layout and exposure protection considerations
- Detection, alarm, gas monitoring and interfaces with battery management and emergency shutdown systems
- Coordination of ventilation, flammable gas and explosion risk with appropriately appointed specialists
- Assessment of suppression, cooling, containment and firewater requirements against the selected system and supporting evidence
- Fire service access, emergency response information, isolation arrangements and post-incident hazards
- Commissioning evidence, inspection requirements, operational changes and maintenance interfaces
Design and deliverables
We define the protection objectives and establish the requirements with the client, manufacturer, electrical designer, relevant specialists and approval stakeholders. The review checks that product test evidence is relevant to the proposed configuration and identifies any gaps. The fire strategy then records design assumptions, interfaces and response arrangements. Frameworks such as NFPA 855 may inform the agreed design basis where relevant; their use does not replace South African requirements or project-specific authority engagement. Suppression alone is not assumed to stop thermal runaway or remove re-ignition risk.
BESS fire safety basis
A scoped hazard assessment, strategy, evidence register and coordinated fire safety requirements for the proposed installation.
Interface and assurance information
Responsibilities, manufacturer queries, emergency planning inputs and commissioning review requirements suited to the agreed appointment.
Project information
Provide the site layout, battery chemistry and capacity, product details, enclosure drawings, safety data, relevant test reports and proposed operating mode. Include adjacent exposures, electrical design information, firewater availability and the manufacturer’s emergency response and maintenance guidance.
The scope, deliverables, site involvement and responsibilities are confirmed for each appointment.
