Engineering services (Industrial & special hazards)

A warehouse, manufacturing facility or process site can contain several distinct risk areas. Materials, storage arrangements, equipment, utilities and site access each contribute to the overall picture. Defining the hazard and the limits of available information is an essential first step before selecting a protection approach.

Changes to production, storage or utilities can affect existing protection assumptions. At operating facilities, design development must also account for access, shutdown windows, phasing and continuity. The engineering scope should establish which matters FESOL will assess and where other process, electrical or specialist disciplines are required.

Scope of expertise

The appointment is defined around the facility, available information and required project outcomes. Relevant services can include:

  • Fire engineering input for industrial and operational facilities
  • Review of hazard information and protection objectives
  • Firewater and protection system design considerations
  • Coordination with process, operational and specialist stakeholders
  • Technical assessment of proposed modifications and system interfaces
  • External fire exposure and separation considerations
  • Identification of explosion, hazardous-area and process-safety interfaces requiring specialist input

Design and deliverables

We begin with the process description, hazard information and available records. The protection objectives and key constraints are then developed with the client and relevant specialists. Proposed engineering measures are assessed against that agreed basis, with uncertainties and further information requirements recorded.

Defined engineering basis

Protection objectives, design inputs, scope boundaries and specialist interface requirements.

Technical recommendations

Design advice, review findings or system requirements matched to the agreed appointment.

Project information

Provide site layouts, process descriptions, material and storage information, existing fire system records and planned changes. Identify the operating stakeholders and any site-specific access or safety requirements.

The scope, deliverables, site involvement and responsibilities are confirmed for each appointment.
